Become a Part of the Young Leaders Program

Whether you are just starting your career or have a few years under your belt, you are positioned to lead the mining industry and SME is ready to help you get there. Professionals who are 35 years or younger, demonstrate great leaderships skills, and currently work in the mining industry are welcome to join us and connect and grow with SME.


Attendees must register to purchase tickets for the 2018 SME Annual Conference & Expo and 91st Annual Meeting of the SME-MN Section social functions.

Multiple tickets for each event may be purchased.

Young Leaders Field Trip (Ticketed)

Saturday, Feb. 24 | 8:00am - 12:00pm | Meet at MCC entrance

Get hands-on experience with some of the biggest mining and processing projects in the nation. Learn about innovative technologies, strategic operations, and much more. For this year, we will be visiting the Gerdau St. Paul steel mill. We’ll leave from the convention center at around 8 am on Saturday, February 24th.

Young Leaders Social (Invitation Only)

All current members of the SME Young Leaders are invited to come relax and kick off the conference. Come meet your fellow Young Leaders away from the conference atmosphere. There will be food, drinks, and good company! Location to be revealed. Please contact Melissa Boerst for more information.

Young Leaders Professional Development Session

Join in this round-table discussion as our presenters from academia and industry speak on the need and benefits of advanced certifications in your career. Speakers include Dr. Jurgen Brune, Dr. Thomas Camm, Dr. Braden Lusk, and Dr. Andrea Brickey.

2018 Collegiate Mine Rescue Skills Competition

Tuesday, Feb. 27 | 2:00pm - 6:00pm | MCC 201AB, 203AB, 204AB

Come and watch mine rescue teams compete at the First Bi-Annual Collegiate Mine Rescue Skills Competition organized by the Young Leaders Committee.  The event highlights collegiate mine rescue by providing student teams an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge at the SME Annual Conference.  The four events, Apparatus Benching, First Aid, Gas Detector Tech, and Written Exam, make up the contest with a best-of-three-event score determining the winner.  Event room doors will be open, and all SME attendees are welcome to observe the teams compete at this inaugural event.
