SME-MN Section Learn to Curl Funspiel

Interested in trying an Olympic sport that is described as “Chess on Ice”? Try the SME Learn to Curl Funspiel! You will have a chance to try curling at the official USA Olympic training center at the Four Seasons Curling Club at Fogerty Arena in Blaine, Minnesota where you will be joined by former and future Olympians as well as many Minnesota Section members who curl regularly. Tickets are $75/person and include: bus transportation to Fogerty Arena in Blaine, Minnesota; instructional session on terminology, safety, rules and strategy; over two hours of ice time with instruction on how to deliver the stone, how to sweep and basic strategy; a two- or three end game (more if time allows); and a social hour with food and drinks to unwind and to get to know your teammates and opponents (the best part of curling).
Equipment is provided by the arena. All you need bring are comfortable, loose fitting clothes; a clean pair of tennis shoes and a light jacket, hat and mittens (the arena temperature is around 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit). Curlers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Modifications to the game can be made to accommodate anyone’s physical abilities. It will be a great way to experience ice in Minnesota without having to be outside and is probably the only time you will ever sweep for fun.
Tickets for spectators and those wishing to attend the social hour are also available for $30/person.

- It is generally agreed that curling was developed in Scotland in the 16th century on frozen marshes.
- Curling was first an Olympic medal sport in 1924, but did not obtain full medal status again until 1998.
- Curling is played in 48 countries worldwide. Canada leads the way with around 1 million active curlers.
- The modern curling stone is round, made of granite, and weighs about 42 pounds.
- The first known U.S. curling clubs were located in?New York City, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Portage, Wis.
- Sweeping can help a stone slide up to an additional 15 feet.
- On average, an athlete can walk up to 2 miles in an 8-end game.

The live "Shark Tank" style event will feature the five finalist teams competing for a chance to win $5,000.
